Prime at The Bentley Hotel

NOTE: THIS PLACE IS CLOSED

A buddy of mine who keeps Kosher suggested that I try this place with him. I didn’t really know what to expect when it came to Kosher meats. It turns out to be every bit as awesome as regular meat.

This place is a pop-up at the hotel, and not 100% steak house per se, though you certainly get that feel from looking at the menu. Also, we came in for a quick bite at the bar – just entrees – so I feel like I can’t give this place the full JP review with all 10 categories just yet. For now, I will stick to the meat and booze.

I sank my teeth into a nice juicy 10-spice prime rib eye. It had a psychotic crust on it that locked in all the great juices. It was nicely cooked to a medium rare / medium temperature (though the flash photo kind of drowns out the color). Fries were nice too, with a sort-of cajun seasoning mix on them. 8/10.

My buddy had the roasted chicken, which was really tender and juicy through and through. Nicely prepared.

20141113_214325

Jules, bartender mixed a fucking great martini, and had excellent suggestions in terms of the food choices. Only down side at the bar was that the cable in the joint didn’t broadcast all the necessary sports channels, so we couldn’t watch the end of the Rangers game that my buddy wanted to catch. Nice windows and beautiful view of the city from in here too.

Here’s the damage – not too bad at all: likely because Jules hooked us up with a round of drinks, which was totally unexpected and awesome. Thanks, brother.

Mei-Jin Ramen

I saw a write-up about this joint that mentioned their beef broth. Beef broth seems to be a pretty rare item in the NYC ramen world. I only know of three (and a half) places that offer it: Takashi (midnight ramen), Ganso (which I have not tried yet), Kung Fu Little Steamed Buns Ramen (this is the half mark, because it is technically not ramen), and this joint, Mei-Jin.

DSC01922

So I ordered their namesake ramen, which is a beef flavored miso broth. It was nice and creamy, and had a great beefy flavor with just the right amount of kick to it. The wavy egg noodles were cooked perfectly al dente as well. The only down side was that one of my slices of beef was too tough to even chew, so I left it in the bowl at the end. Bummer.

DSC01926

Another good thing about this place is the space – even as it was getting busy in there the place was large enough to sit more people than most ramen spots, as it has three rooms.

Here they are slinging the shit up:

UPDATE 9/1/17

I stopped in with my wife for a quick bowl of ramen. We started with the fried lotus chips. These were tasty, but overpriced at $6.

My wife got a really interesting curry-soy pork ramen. Delicious.

I went with the washu beef ramen, which is make with a beef bone stock and slices of wagyu beef. This was hefty at $22 a pop. While I may not get it again based on price, I am really glad I did get it, because it was one of the most flavorful beef ramen bowls I’ve had in a while.

JG Melon

I came in here with my wife and parents on a Sunday morning at 11:40am. The place was already jam packed and it was non-stop even after we left.

DSC01546

This place is a landmark NYC icon.  A cash-only wonder. A haven for burger aficionados. A pub crawler’s dream.

DSC01544_2

Since this place consistently ranks among the top burger places in NYC, I had to try it. My verdict: I think the name has some hype to it, like a Peter Luger steak. It was good, don’t get me wrong, but not THAT good.

DSC01551

DSC01556

My dad and I had bacon cheeseburgers. Each coming in at $11.50, these fuckers are a bit on the pricey side, especially since they don’t come with fries. I ordered medium, but it came back pretty much well done. I didn’t take a look at my dad’s. Sucks, but it was at least very tasty.

DSC01558

Great bun – they stick to the potato bun which holds up under intense scrutiny. Bacon was crispy, and cheese was yellow and American, just how I like it.

The fries were little discs. Crisp on the outside, soft and mushy on the inside. I just prefer a tradition stick shape.

DSC01549

My wife had a grilled cheese with tomato and bacon. Also a hefty price tag at $11+ without fries. It was, however, very good.

DSC01554

My mom had an omlette – very good portion size, and it came with fries.

DSC01552

For dessert, my wife and I split the sour cream apple walnut pie, which we noticed while reading over the wall-o-desserts and taking in all the watermelon themed art.

DSC01545

Delicious. Not too sweet, nice and warm, and a really great way to end a meal on a cold day.

DSC01561

Cool thing about this place too is that the kitchen is wide open to your viewing, and small/basic as hell:

Yasha Ramen

My wife and I grabbed a sweet group on deal for this place: $15 gets you $25 worth of food.

DSC01083

Since it was up on 106th/107th, a good hike for us, we made a little trip out of it. There were a few spots around that corner of Central Park that I always wanted to see, as well as the home of Harry Houdini.

Anyway – back to the point… we were able to try three different bowls of ramen. I had the tonkotsu, pork broth with half a seasoned egg and some cha-shu pork. Very tasty:

DSC01095

My wife had the signature ramen, but the spicy version. This is a chicken broth. I liked the kick of the spice, but the chicken based broth over at Totto edges this out a little.

DSC01091

Last was the curry ramen. This bowl came with wavy noodles (the other two were al dente straight noodles, likely alkaline as opposed to egg noodles), as well as a stew-like broth that even had potato and carrot mixed in. Very flavorful and different.

DSC01088 DSC01096

The establishment was spacious, which I liked. Lots of times at these ramen shops I feel like I am bumping elbows with nearby diners. Annoying. And it also gets way too hot in those cramped little shit boxes. This place had high ceilings, a nice big clean bathroom, and enough eating space to feel comfortable, even when fully packed out for lunch crowds, which it was…

Here’s a look at the dude slinging the goods:

Burger Bistro

I noticed a sweet little Groupon deal for this place the last time I was browsing the site. For $10, you get $20 worth of food. I jumped on it, not fully realizing that this place was way the fuck up on 87th and 1st Avenue. Inconvenience aside, my wife and I walked up after spending the day on Roosevelt Island to do some photo exploring.

Here’s what we had:

Fried artichoke hearts. These were tasty, juicy, crisp, well seasoned, and came with a really nice horseradish cream dipping sauce. A bit pricey at almost $9, but pretty good.

DSC00884

The burger was pretty good. Nicely cooked, nicely seasoned, a good amount of cheese, and the potato bun was just right. I went with American, lettuce, tomato and onion.

DSC00887

DSC00885

DSC00891

We ordered some “seasoned fries” to go with it. They looked beautiful but completely lacked any salt. The seasoning used on them reminded me of one of those Mrs. Dash type “salt substitute” disasters. Also, they weren’t very crisp. Disappointment, although I must admit they LOOK awesome:

DSC00886

Moral of the story here: The Groupon deal is definitely worth it for the burgers. Maybe try the regular fries though.

The Penrose

Last week when I was introduced to BurgerFi by my buddy, he also showed me The Penrose. The decor was mad cool – old fashioned gastro pub look and feel. Really nicely done. I made a thick, bold mental note, in sharpie, to make sure I went back to give that shit a try. So I did, with my wife in tow.

Here’s the breakdown:

We started with chicharones (pork rinds). There were really crispy, crackly and light. The lime juice really took them to the next level.

Next the entrees came out. I had the Penrose burger with cheddar. Really nicely cooked and seasoned. Loved every bite.

My wife had the mussels, which came with perfectly buttery and toasty bread and a really unique broth, which included almonds, that we were sucking up with straws at the end.

A really great meal. And these three items, with 2 drinks included (it was happy hour), only came to about $50. You can’t beat it. We will be back for sure.

Burger Fi

A buddy of mine has been telling me how great Burger Fi is for a while now. I finally made it up there to give it the old Johnny Prime try.

Burger Fi 010

Scan_Pic0008

I had a “Breakfast All Day” burger (aka the B.A.D. Burger), a Chicago dog, and “cry & fries” (french fries and onion rings). And, of course, a vanilla shake. My buddy had a New York dog and a Bud.

Burger Fi 013

Burger Fi 012

First, a bit about the burger: it’s a natural Angus burger topped with American cheese, hickory bacon drizzled with maple syrup, a fried egg, hash browns and grilled diced onions. This thing is a fucking beast. Typically you get a double burger patty, but with this monster you don’t, because of all the good toppings.

Burger Fi 015

It was really tasty. The ratio of all the different shit is just right.

Burger Fi 018

The Chicago dog was great. The dog itself is split and grilled, and then popped onto a poppy seed bun and topped with relish, diced onion, tomato, sport peppers, celery salt and pickles. This shit is legit. A little messy as you get down on it, but the flavor is fantastic.

Burger Fi 014

The fries and O-rings are good, but I would make sure to order my fries extra crispy next time. They’re seasoned correctly and they are flavorful. Onion rings are solid, real crispy and not too greasy at all. I actually enjoyed those more.

Burger Fi 016

And that’s that. Make sure you get up to the UES to try this place out. It’s pretty great.

Burger Fi 011

Burger Fi 017

UPDATE – On a second visit the following week, I tried a BurgerFi Cheeseburger with onions and jalapenos, along with EXTRA CRISPY cry & fries. All was amazing. Extra crispy is definitely the way to go, and I prefer the regular burger over the B.A.D. burger.

Paname

I was recently invited to a press dinner at Paname, a French bistro on 2nd Avenue and 56th Street. I’m by no means a master of knowledge on French cuisine, but the food here was pretty great, so it merits a nice write up with pretty pictures.

Chef-owner Bernard Ros is a really well-seasoned restaurateur. He’s been in the game for 45 years in NYC, learning how to cook and run restaurants in Paris with his parents from a very young age. He has run successful restaurants throughout the boro, bouncing around to find the best rents that make sense for his style of restaurant, and the atmosphere he wishes to create: classic, neighborhood, mom & pop, casual yet refined dining, with top quality ingredients.

Paname 003

Paname 002

Bernard’s specialty is seafood, but he hits the high mark on all sorts of fare, including the traditional duck and steak entrees and even desserts (all of which he still makes himself as head chef).

Paname 001_pp2

When I asked him how he still keeps the passion for cooking after so many years, his response was that he keeps pushing himself to make better quality food with better ingredients. That’s the kind of drive that keeps him successful in the most dog-eat-dog city in the world, I suppose. And cheers to him for doing it, because we all get to benefit from his hard work and decades of experience.

Paname 021

Authentic is the word that best sums up the experience here at Paname. Even the Mayor of Paris has said that this place is like dining on a corner of the great city of Paris, that city of mi amours, mercis, oui ouis, bon bons and all that good stuff (French vanilla, butter pecan, chocolate deluxe). That’s a reference to Chef Raekwon (rapper), if you didn’t know.

Okay so now on to the important part of the review – food and pics. You’ll notice right away that the presentation and plating here is excellent. You eat first with your eyes, my friends.

We started with an amuse bouche of puff pastry with gorgonzola cheese and red and green sauce. The cheese was great here. Slightly melty, with just enough funk to open up the taste buds.

Paname 004

The star of the appetizers was the pate with cornichon and mustard, with a light vinaigrette salad. The pate was meaty and substantial, unlike so many other places that essentially give you a soft, spreadable mousse. This was like a little liver steak. Amazing.

Paname 012

Next was the crab cake. Now, don’t get me wrong, this is a pretty decent crab cake, but after dining at some of the worlds best steak houses, Del Frisco’s has pretty much hit the apex when it comes to crab cakes. I would steer you more toward the traditional French culinary items here, because they are done so very well.

Paname 010

We also tried the baby octopus with beans. This was beautifully prepared and it packed a lot of flavor, though I think maybe it would come out nicer with proper braised adult octopus legs instead of the finicky and difficult to cook baby octo, which can become tough at times and cook unevenly.

Paname 007

For entrees we tried the duck with orange sauce: a classic. It was served with a small side of al dente barley and a vegetable medley (string beans, carrots, cauliflower). What you got was half a breast and a leg. Both were executed perfectly, juicy and tender, with the skin being the star of the show. My wife is pretty much a duck connoisseur, so to impress her is no easy feat. This dish won her over big time.

Paname 015

I had the bouillabaisse, which was served up with cod, mussels, shrimp, and Littleneck clams. The sauce was really good, and the toasted bread that came with it had a nice spicy mayo spread for the fat to cut the acid. Beautiful. The seafood was tender and packed a lot of great flavor.

Paname 013

We also tried the sushi grade tuna. Our host ordered it well done, which is way overcooked for our liking, but it still tasted great.

Paname 016

And on the side we had some perfect, crispy, golden-brown french fries. Wonderful.

Paname 019

As a pre-dessert, the staff brought out a small dessert plate with butterfly cookies, half bite muffin type things, and a chocolate biscotti type of baked creation.

For dessert proper, we had creme brulee, which was great and very big…

Paname 031

…Crepes, which were a bit thick and doughy, but I enjoyed them because they were very flavorful with the grand marnier and almonds…

Paname 030

…And a plate of fruit, nuts and cheese. Simple and elegant.

Paname 032

For wines, if you get a similar type of meal, I would go with the Sauvignon blanc to start, then build to the rose, and finish off with the Cotes du Rhone, a very light but still flavorful red.
