Best Sicily Bottega

This little Sicilian shop has some pretty tasty shit! My friend and I tried their potato pizza, their tomato garlic and anchovy pizza, their meat arancini, and their orange olive oil cake.

Everything was awesome. For me, the favorite was probably the potato pizza with the tomato slice close behind. These were in the Roman style for pizza, which I love to see done right like this.

They also sell some nice looking sandwiches, and great, difficult to find groceries like Castelvetrano olive spread and pistachio cream.

L&B Spumoni Gardens

I finally made it over to L&B Spumoni Gardens out near Coney Island. My buddy and I took a ride out on our Zooz bikes and feasted.

I had the famous upside down Sicilian slice, which is unique because the cheese is under the sauce, directly on the dough.

This was awesome, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The dough itself was a little dense, but not enough to feel very heavy. It had a nice crisp on the outside. I also thought $4 was high, but not out of step with what other popular pizza joints are charging for a regular slice these days. And a Sicilian slice always feels more substantial than a regular slice.

The regular slice was … well … regular. You could get something on par with this at almost any NYC slice joint in town.

That said, it was still good to above average.

For dessert, the classic spumoni, of course. I got the small size for $5, which consists of chocolate, pistachio and cherry flavors.

This place is iconic, and an absolutely legendary NYC institution. I highly recommend a visit, especially on a nice summer day when you can sit outside.

Gravesend Pizza

I stopped in this little joint as I was riding around Sunset Park, and I have to say I was impressed!

I ordered a margarita slice and a grandma slice, and I had the guy warm them slightly and slice for me, so I could shovel them down my throat faster without getting shit in my beard.

I think I liked the grandma slice SLIGHTLY better, but both were awesome. Nice sauce, not too sweet, great crisp on the crust without being dry. I’d go back.

Roberta’s

I finally got a chance to try Roberta’s, and I have to say it was good!

I tried the pepperoni slice, and the “fire and ice” slice. I think I preferred the “fire and ice,” which seemed to be fresh burrata and Calabrian chili “bomba” style sauce. Incredible! Great crust, no flop, quality toppings.

New Haven Pizza: Sally’s & Pepe’s

I finally got to try some of the famous pizza in New Haven. My buddy and I took a ride up and tried both Sally’s Apizza and Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana.

First, Pepe’s:

We tried the white clam pie, and their tomato and mozz pie.

Both were pretty good, but we liked the tomato and mozz pie better.

The award winning clam pizza was nice, but I feel like I’ve had better.

Next up was Sally’s:

Here, we tried the tomato and mozz pie, along with the potato and rosemary pie.

We both liked the tomato and mozz pie slightly better, but I have to say, I really enjoyed the potato and rosemary pie. It had a ton of flavor!

Over all, though, the classic was king. And between the two pizza joints, we liked Sally’s better than Pepe’s.

I’m still partial to NYC pizza, but this stuff was pretty good.

Saint Pizza

This new slice and pie joint on Avenue B near 14th Street serves up some really nice stuff. I went with the fresh mozz slice, and my wife went with this nice arugula and burrata Sicilian style slice.

Both great, but I think the crust on the square slice was better.

I’ll definitely be back to try some other slices as well as their lasagna!

Luzzo

Long story short: you can kip this place! The pepperoni slice is fine, but at $5-$6 a slice, this place is a rip off.

I feel like you can do better at a good dollar slice joint. The toppings on this pesto and fresh mozz “Genovese” slice were nice, but the dough was a little gummy – maybe underbaked – and dense.

Finally, the official name of the restaurant is “Luzzo’s La Pizza Napoletana,” but there is nothing Neapolitan about this pizza. It’s a standard slice joint that’s oddly reminiscent of some national chain pizzerias, like Sbarro’s or Little Caesar’s.

I really enjoyed both slices that I tried, and I’ll definitely be back for more. Their “any two slices for $6” lunch deal is pretty great, considering that no slice is off the table. Go big!

Leo

This joint slings some tasty sourdough pizza. I’ve always wanted to try a sourdough slice, and I was finally able to do so here at Leo.

I highly recommend this place; the slices have a distinct “freshly made at grandma’s house” kind of flavor to them.

I need to go back to try their potato slice, as well as their soft serve – apparently they’re famous for both, and I’m a huge sucker for soft serve.

Ainslie Bowery

Ainslie Bowery is a newly opened Italian joint that has a huge selection of beer.

The place is enormous inside. So big, that I really don’t know how they’re going to stay in business if they aren’t packed out every day.

Anyway, I was excited to try this new spot by us, so my wife and I went last weekend. We started with the rosemary wings and salt and pepper ribs. Both were really great. I preferred the ribs but my wife liked he wings better.

For our middle course, we split the “diavola” pizza. Spicy salami and kalamata black olives on top of fresh mozzarella and a nice tomato sauce. This was a bit too salty, but otherwise good. As you can see, one side of the pie took a little more heat than the other.

The pasta dishes were very good here. We tried the orecchiette with broccoli rabe and sausage, as well as the pork ragu pappardelle. We both preferred the orecchiette.

For dessert, tiramisu. This was nice. It’s rare for one of these to stand out among so many others in town, but it was perfect.

We will definitely be back to try more.
